Understanding the Pressures of Frontline Work
Working in policing or other emergency services can expose you to repeated trauma, intense pressure, and complex moral decisions. The impact often builds up over time—leaving many professionals feeling emotionally worn down, disconnected, or unable to switch off.
From a psychodynamic perspective, frontline stress is rarely just about individual incidents. It’s about the emotional weight carried over time, the coping mechanisms developed to survive, and the personal cost of always having to be in control. Counselling offers a confidential space to explore what’s going on beneath the surface.

How Counselling Can Help
Psychodynamic counselling provides an opportunity to speak freely—without judgement or clinical detachment. Rather than focusing on quick symptom management, we work together to explore the deeper emotional patterns that may be affecting your wellbeing and relationships.
Counselling can help if you:
- Struggle with cumulative stress, burnout, or emotional exhaustion
- Experience intrusive memories, nightmares, or PTSD symptoms
- Have difficulty trusting others or maintaining close relationships
- Feel isolated, emotionally numb, or disconnected from everyday life
- Carry guilt or regret about past incidents or decisions
- Are finding it hard to leave “work mode” behind, even on rest days
- Want support adjusting to retirement, role change, or long-term leave
Together, we can begin to understand the impact of your work, process unresolved experiences, and develop a healthier relationship with your emotions.
What to Expect
I understand the cultural realities of policing and frontline work following a long career in the Police. Vulnerability can be difficult to express and trust is earned. Counselling with me is private, consistent, and always at your pace. You won’t be told to “open up” or revisit trauma before you’re ready.
This is your space, and I will work with you professionally, confidentially, and without judgement.
