Understanding Trauma

Trauma can leave lasting emotional and psychological effects, even long after the event has passed. You may find yourself feeling numb, hyper-alert, disconnected, or overwhelmed by sudden waves of emotion. Sometimes, you might not associate these feelings with trauma at all—but they often point to experiences that haven’t yet been fully processed.

From a psychodynamic perspective, trauma is not only about what happened, but about how the mind has managed and defended against those experiences. When traumatic memories remain unprocessed, they can shape your inner world and relationships in ways that are difficult to articulate. Psychodynamic counselling provides space to explore these unconscious patterns safely and gradually.

How Counselling Can Help

Psychodynamic counselling allows us to explore the impact of trauma without rushing or forcing disclosure. The focus is not just on what happened, but on how it lives on inside you—in your thoughts, relationships, emotions, and body.

Counselling can help if you:

  • Experience flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories
  • Feel emotionally disconnected or chronically on edge
  • Have difficulty trusting others or maintaining relationships
  • Avoid reminders of past events
  • Carry a deep sense of shame, guilt, or self-blame
  • Struggle to understand why you feel or react the way you do

Together, we begin to make sense of your experience and develop new ways of relating to yourself and others. Over time, this can bring a greater sense of stability, clarity, and relief.

What to Expect

I offer a confidential, professional counselling relationship tailored to your pace. Whether we meet online or in person, you’ll have a consistent space to be heard and understood—without judgment or pressure.

Counselling for trauma is not about revisiting everything all at once. It’s about building trust, working safely, and understanding how the past continues to affect the present—so you can begin to move forward.
