Depression and Low-Mood Counselling

Depression can affect motivation, relationships, sleep, concentration and the ability to take pleasure in life. Sometimes there is an identifiable loss or change. At other times, low mood seems to arrive without an obvious reason.

How depression can feel

You may feel slowed down, empty, irritable, detached or unable to imagine things improving. Depression can also appear through harsh self-criticism, withdrawal, hopelessness or a sense of being stuck in the same patterns.

Depression in men

Some men find it difficult to describe feeling depressed and may first notice anger, numbness, overwork, drinking, isolation or difficulties in relationships. Counselling offers a place to speak without being expected to perform, minimise what is happening or cope alone. I work with adults of all genders.

A psychodynamic approach

Psychodynamic counselling considers both what is happening now and the emotional experiences that may lie beneath it. Together we can explore losses, relationships, expectations and unconscious patterns that may contribute to low mood.

Understanding these connections does not produce an instant solution, but it can reduce confusion and create the possibility of responding differently.

What counselling can offer

  • A confidential place to speak openly
  • Time to understand recurring emotional patterns
  • Exploration of loss, anger, shame and self-criticism
  • Greater awareness of how relationships affect mood
  • Support in developing a more compassionate understanding of yourself
