Stress and Burnout Counselling

Long periods of pressure can leave you exhausted, irritable, detached or unable to switch off. You may continue functioning outwardly while feeling increasingly depleted underneath.

Signs that stress is becoming difficult to manage

  • Persistent tension, worry or poor sleep
  • Feeling emotionally numb or unusually irritable
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Withdrawing from relationships and activities
  • Relying on work, alcohol or distraction to avoid feelings
  • A loss of motivation, purpose or confidence

More than workload

Burnout is not always caused by the number of hours worked. Responsibility, workplace relationships, perfectionism, fear of failure and the pressure to remain dependable can all contribute. Earlier experiences may influence why it feels difficult to set limits, ask for help or recognise your own needs.

Stress in men

Some men experience distress through anger, sleeplessness, overwork or withdrawal rather than describing themselves as anxious or overwhelmed. Counselling offers a confidential place to think about these experiences. My practice is open to adults of all genders.

Frontline and high-responsibility roles

Military personnel, veterans, police officers, emergency-services staff and healthcare workers may be accustomed to functioning under pressure. The habits that help during demanding situations can become difficult to switch off elsewhere, affecting sleep, relationships and emotional life.

How counselling can help

Psychodynamic counselling explores both current pressures and the patterns that may keep them in place. Greater understanding can make it easier to recognise limits, respond to emotions and make decisions with more freedom.
